Why fine mesh

Built for needles, not just leaves.

Anything with big openings handles maple leaves and lets pine needles straight through.

A lot of houses in this part of the Panhandle sit under pines and oaks, and needles are what pack a gutter solid.

Fine mesh sits across the trough, with openings small enough that needles ride over the edge instead of dropping in.

The water still gets through. What is left dries on top and blows off.

It goes over your existing gutter where the run is sound, or over a new one as part of an install.

Needles, grit and shingle sand come out. Sealing debris in under a guard is how guards get a bad name.

Pitch, hangers and the outlet — a guard will not save a gutter that is already tipped the wrong way.

Honest limits

What a guard will not do.

It will not stop a roof shedding grit, and it will not put the fall back in a sagging run.

It will not make a downspout that was always too small big enough.

What it does is take the yearly scoop-out off your list and stop the trough turning into a planter.

Valleys carry a lot of water, so those get looked at first.
Shingle grit builds up on top of the mesh over the years and gets brushed off.
A guard over a sagging run only hides the sag. The run gets fixed first.

Will guards work with my existing gutters?

Usually yes, as long as the run is sound and hung right. We check the pitch and the hangers before anything goes on.

Do they really handle pine needles?

That is exactly what fine mesh is chosen for. Larger-opening covers are the ones that let needles through.

Will I still need them cleaned?

Not scooped out, but worth a look. Grit builds on top over the years, and valleys move a lot of debris.

Can you do the guards and the gutters together?

Yes, and it is the tidier way round: the new run goes up and the mesh goes on the same visit.
