What a cleanout is

Out of the gutter, and out of the drop.

Most of what blocks a gutter is not leaves.

It is pine needles, seed pods and the sand shingles shed every year, packed into a mat that water runs straight over.

The trough gets cleared by hand, then the outlets and downspouts get checked.

When to have it done

01After the needles drop
Pines shed in early summer and again in fall. A trough under one packs up fast.
02After the leaves
Late fall, once the hardwoods have finished, before the first freeze puts water in there.
03After a real storm
A storm can put a season of debris into a run in an afternoon.
04Before it freezes
Standing water in a blocked trough freezes, gets heavy, and pulls hangers out of the fascia.

Over the front edge and down the wall, or behind the gutter and into the fascia. Neither one ends well.

While we are up there

A cleanout is also the best chance anyone gets to see what the run is doing. Four things get checked every time.

Whether the run still has its fall, or water is standing in a low spot.
Hangers and spikes — anything backing out of the fascia.
Corners and outlets, for seals that have opened up.
The fascia board itself, where a long-blocked gutter has been sitting against it.

Twice a year under trees, once if the house sits in the open. Guards change that a lot.

Do you take the debris away?

Say so when you book and it leaves with us.

Can you clear a blocked downspout?

Yes, and that is usually the actual problem when a clean gutter still overflows.

It has never been cleaned. Is that a problem?
